Biography

Lacksley Hugh Castell, also known as Locksley Castell and sometimes misspelled Laxley, Lacksly, Lasky, or Locksley Castel, was a Jamaican reggae singer who grew up in Kingston’s Waterhouse district. He began his music career with the support of fellow musician Hugh Mundell, releasing early singles such as “Babylon World." In 1979, Castell recorded “Jah Love Is Sweeter” at Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark Studios. That same year, his single “What a Great Day (It Will Be)” reached the top five of the reggae 12-inch singles chart. Castell recorded the album Jah Fire with Hugh Mundell in 1980 and also contributed backing vocals to Sugar Minott’s Black Roots. He released his solo albums Morning Glory (1982) and Princess Lady (1983). Castell died in November 1983 at the age of 24.
