Biography
Lillian Allen, born on April 5, 1951 in Spanish Town, Jamaica, is a Canadian dub poet, writer, and singer. She moved to New York City in 1969, studying English at the City University of New York before settling in Toronto and completing her education at York University. Allen's music career began working on dub poetry after meeting Oku Onuora in Cuba in 1978. She won the Juno Award for Best Reggae/Calypso Album for Revolutionary Tea Party in 1986 and again for Conditions Critical in 1988. In 2023, she was named Poet Laureate of Toronto.
