Biography
Black Lab is an American alternative rock band formed in 1995 in Berkeley, California, by singer-songwriter Paul Durham. The original lineup included guitarist Michael Belfer, bassist Geoff Stanfield, and drummer Michael Urbano. The ensemble released its debut studio album, Your Body Above Me, on October 21, 1997, through Geffen Records. The record produced the successful singles âWash It Awayâ and âTime Agoâ, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and selling over 120,000 copies. Following the dissolution of Geffen Records, Durham moved to Los Angeles and the original group disbanded in 1999. Durham resumed activity with a new lineup in 2000, eventually releasing the independent album See the Sun in 2005. The band achieved further visibility in 2007 with the album Passion Leaves a Trace, which featured the single âThis Nightâ, used in promotional material for the television series The Shield. Later independent releases included the 2011 acoustic album Unplugged and 2016's A New World. Michael Belfer died in 2022.
