Biography

La Familia André, a prominent Dominican merengue band, was founded in 1981 by Fernando Echavarría, who pioneered the "fusón" genre—a fusion of Afro-Antillean rhythms such as merengue, son, plena, jazz, cumbia, and samba. The band gained widespread recognition with hits like "Pato Roba'o," "Marcela," and "Dónde e' qué é," which became anthems in the Dominican music scene. Their innovative sound and dynamic performances earned them international acclaim, leading to tours across Latin America and the United States. Throughout their career, La Familia André released several successful albums that showcased their unique blend of traditional and contemporary musical styles. Tragically, Fernando Echavarría passed away on October 10, 2015, at the age of 62, just before a scheduled performance in Santo Domingo, marking the end of an era for the band and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of Caribbean music.
