Mambo, a Puerto Rican merengue group founded in 1998 by producer Hiram Villanueva, quickly gained prominence with their unique sound and innovative approach to tropical music. Their debut album, released under Tropix Music, featured the hit single âCorazón PartÃo,â a merengue rendition of Alejandro Sanzâs classic. However, it was the Elvis Crespo-composed âElla tiene el saborâ that catapulted them to international fame, selling over 50,000 units and earning a deal with Sony Discos. In 2000, their second album Evolución, released under Pina Music, delivered chart-toppers like âComo ladrón,â âMe la llevo yo,â and âQué quieres de mÃ,â solidifying their reputation as one of Puerto Ricoâs beloved merengue groups. Their 2002 album Diferente showcased their vocal harmonies and sophisticated arrangements, with standout tracks like âUsted se me llevó la vidaâ and âTe recuerdo.â By 2004, Mambo embraced modern influences with Todo o nada, introducing merengue urbano, a fusion of merengue and reggaetón. Their 2008 album Historias included the fan-favorite âCuéntaleâ and explored bachata influences. After a compilation release in 2019, Mambo returned in 2022 with the single âAtrévete,â proving their enduring appeal and continued evolution in the Latin music scene.
