Biography

Joanna Wang, born Wang Ruolin on 1 August 1988 in Taipei, Taiwan, is a Taiwanese‑American singer‑songwriter who began her musical journey after leaving high school at sixteen. Her debut double‑disc album Start from Here was released on 11 June 2008, topping charts in Taiwan and gaining popularity across Southeast Asia; the English and Chinese versions showcased her bilingual artistry. In 2009 she followed with Joanna & Wang Ruo‑lin, featuring the original The Adult Storybook, and continued a steady output with albums such as Midnight Cinema (2014), House of Bullies (2016), and Modern Tragedy (2018). Notable singles include "When I Nod" (2015), "Isn't It Exciting?" (2016), "I Only Care About You" (2019), and "Helpless" (2019), while "Dead Talents Society" was released in 2024. Wang’s work earned her the 2008 Singapore Hit Awards Outstanding Newcomer, the 2008 CCTV‑MTV Music Awards Most Popular New Female Artist of the Year, and the 2008 Metro Hits Music Awards Metro Radio Hits Most Voted Newcomer Award. Her rendition of "Pure Imagination" from Midnight Cinema was featured in a 2019 Samsung Galaxy Fold advertisement, underscoring her cultural reach. In 2024 she released the concept album Hotel La Rut, inspired by the Kids In The Hall sketch, solidifying her continued influence in contemporary folk pop.
