Biography

Jolin Tsai (蔡依林; born September 15, 1980, in Hsinchuang, New Taipei City) is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter and cultural icon who rose to fame after winning a 1998 MTV Mandarin–Sony singing contest. Her teenage debut album 1019 (1999) made her a pop sensation and, with follow‑ups like Don't Stop (2000), she quickly became one of Taiwan’s top-selling female artists, routinely topping domestic charts. Her 2003 breakthrough Magic marked a bold shift into dance-pop, a style solidified with later albums like Dancing Diva, Play (2014)—which won multiple Golden Melody Awards—and Ugly Beauty (2018), her fourteenth album, which became Taiwan’s best‑selling album of 2019 and redefined beauty standards through its blend of pop, electronic, reggae, and hip‑hop. Over her career, Tsai has sold over 25 million records, earned seven Golden Melody Awards—including Album of the Year and Song of the Year multiple times—solidifying her as the most decorated dance‑pop artist in Mandarin music. Known for her evolving artistry, stage spectacle (such as her Ugly Beauty World Tour, spanning Asia from 2019 to 2024), and active advocacy in philanthropy and social causes, her impact extends well beyond music. In July 2025, she released her fifteenth studio album Pleasure, featuring tracks like "Layers" and "Pillow ".
