J. J. Barrie, born Barrie Authors on July 7, 1933, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, was a Canadian singer and songwriter. His career began in the 1960s as part of the comedy duo Authors & Swinson with a school friend. The duo achieved international success, performing in major theaters across North America and Europe, including New York and London. They were inducted into their hometown Oshawa's Walk of Fame. In the 1970s, J. J. Barrie transitioned to songwriting and management, working with artists such as Ocean and Blue Mink. His first solo release was "Whereâs the Reason", which he offered to Glen Campbell before recording it himself under his new stage name J. J. Barrie. Although this single did not achieve significant success, his cover of "No Charge" became a hit in the UK, reaching Number 1 on the charts in June 1976. Despite subsequent releases and continued activity as a singer throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, he is best known for this single success. His final album, J.J. Barrie Sings Songs from Fraggle Rock, was released in 1984. J. J. Barrie died on May 10, 2026, at the age of 92.
