Annette Joanne Funicello, born on 22 October 1942 in Utica, New York, was an American actor and singer who recorded as Annette Funicello. She launched her professional career at just 12 years old, rising to become one of the most popular Mouseketeers on the original Mickey Mouse Club. Walt Disney himself spotted her talent when she performed as the Swan Queen in Swan Lake at a dance recital. She inked a seven-year contract with Disney and quickly became a fan favourite, receiving thousands of letters monthly. Her popularity led to roles in several serials on The Mickey Mouse Club, including Adventure in Dairyland and Walt Disney Presents: Annette. During this time, she also appeared in the Disney television series Zorro, assuming the role of Anita Cabrillo. In 1959, she released her debut album Annette, which included her first single "How Will I Know My Love". Among her subsequent albums were Italianette/Hawaiiannette (1960), Muscle Beach Party (1964), Annette Funicello Country Album (1984), A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes (1995), and A Tribute to Walt Disney â Promised Land (2013). Her memorable singles include "O Dio Mio", "First Name Initial", and "Pineapple Princess". During the mid-1960s, she established herself as a film actor, popularising the successful 'beach party' film genre alongside co-star Frankie Avalon. She starred in several films, notably The Shaggy Dog (1959) and Babes in Toyland (1961). In 1992, Annette Funicello announced that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, later passing away from complications due to the condition on 8 April 2013.
