James Robert Jarmusch was born on January 22, 1953, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He developed an early interest in cinema while growing up in Akron, Ohio, and began his academic journey at Northwestern University before transferring to Columbia University in New York. Jarmusch's first film, Permanent Vacation, was released in 1980. He then worked as a production assistant for Wim Wenders before creating his breakthrough film, Stranger than Paradise (1984). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Jarmusch directed several notable films including Down by Law (1986), Mystery Train (1989), and Dead Man (1995). He also directed music videos for artists like Talking Heads, Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Jack White. In addition to his film career, Jarmusch composed music for various projects, releasing several albums with Jozef van Wissem such as The Mystery of Heaven (2012), Apokatastasis (2012), Concerning the Entrance Into Eternity (2012), An Attempt to Draw Aside the Veil (2019), American Landscapes (2023), and The Day the Angels Cried (2025). Jarmusch also collaborated with Lee Ranaldo, Marc Urselli and Balzs Pandi on Ranaldo Jarmusch Urselli Pandi (2019) and Churning of the Ocean (2021).
