Hiroe Ueda, born on 19â¯Octoberâ¯1966 in Aya, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, was a Japanese composer and former popâsingerâsongwriter. While attending Chuo University, she won a nationwide vocal contest in 1986 and signed with Canyon Records/TâEâNâT, making her debut with the single "Solo Sapiens" and becoming the image character for a Daihatsu car campaign. That same year she released her debut album Place In The Sun and the single "Dream Chaser Sniper", which appeared on TV Asahiâs Music Station. In 1988 she released her fifth single "HeartâRacing Future" and concluded her brief contract with the major label. From 1988 onward she worked as a freelance musician, providing backing vocals on Kenjiro Sakitaâs albums Kiss of Life and Ambivalence, and later contributing chorus to his 1998 releases. In 1998 she provided the vocal track "luv wave" for the PC game luv wave and released the collaborative single "Some Woman, Some Story" with EPO and Aami Ozaki. In 2004 Hiroe Ueda adopted the stage name Whoopin and shifted focus to gospel, jazz, and R&B, winning the grand prize at the 10th Kobe Jazz Vocal Queen Contest in 2009 and performing a solo concert at Seattleâs Jazz Alley that same year. She continued to collaborate with Kenjiro Sakita, joined the gospel choir Miyazaki Gospel Choir as lead vocalist and director, and launched the vocal school VoiceWorks. Her career reflects a transition from pop idol to vocalist in gospel and jazz circles.
