Biography

Yōsui Inoue is one of the most successful musicians in Japanese history, selling over 10 million solos albums and writing multiple Number 1 hits over a 55-year career. He was born on August 30, 1948, in Tagawa, Fukuoka. Originally operating under the stage name of "Andre Candre," he debuted in 1969 with the single "Candre Mandre," then released his debut album as "Yōsui Inoue" in 1971. That album, Danzetsu, reached number 8 on the Oricon Albums chart and produced the popular single "Kasa ga Nai," laying the groundwork for Inoue's long, successful career. 1973's Kōri no Sekai, 1974's Nishoku no Koma, 1975's Good Pages, and 1976's Shōtaijō no Nai Show all went to Number 1 in Japan, which Inoue becoming one of the decade's biggest folk-rock stars. He also earned Top 10 hits with songs like 1973's "Kokoro Moyou," 1975's "Aozora, Hitorikiri," 1984's "Isso Serenade," and 1986's "Natsu no Owari no Harmony." Yōsui Inoue returned to Number 1 on the Oricon Albums chart with 1984's 9.5 Carats, 1993's Under the Sun, and 1999's career retrospective Golden Best. Along the way, he also established himself as a hit songwriter for other artists, writing Number 1 singles like Anzen Chitai's "Wine Red no Kokoro" and Akina Nakamori's "Kazari ja Nai no yo Namida wa." He remained commercially successful well into his mid-70s, with "Shonen Jidai" — a multi-platinum song originally released on 1990's Handsome Boy — reaching number 33 on Japan's Top 100 Deezer chart in late 2023.
