Biography

Chisato Moritaka is a Japanese singer and actress. Widely regarded as the "Dance Queen" of J-pop, she was born on April 11, 1969, in Ibaraki, Osaka, and later raised in Kumamoto, Kyushu. She was exposed to the arts from an early age, thanks to her rockabilly band member father and actress mother. Her journey in the entertainment realm began with her victory in the 1986 Pocari Sweat Image Girl Contest. By 1987, she released her single "New Season," rapidly rising to stardom. Distinguished for writing her lyrics and adeptness in multiple instruments, Chisato Moritaka boasted sales of over 6.4 million singles and 5.2 million albums over a decade. Her 1989 song "17-sai" made it to the Top 10, and her fifth album, Kokon Tozai (1990), dominated the Oricon Albums Chart. Her 1993 single "Kaze ni Fukarete" also made it to the very top of the charts. After a hiatus starting in 1999 to prioritize family, she made a comeback in 2007. In commemoration of her 25th anniversary in 2012, she decided to cover 200 songs on her video-streaming channel, finishing in 2017. Collaborations peppered her career, with "Don't Stop the Music" (2013) being particularly noteworthy. 2019 saw her first national tour in over two decades. In 2020, she represented DHC's skincare range and adapted to digital performances amidst the pandemic.
