Helrunar, a German metal band from Münster/Osnabrück, was formed in spring 2001. The band's name is derived from Jan Fries' book Helrunar: Ein Handbuch der Runenmagie, meaning "Those who whisper with Hel." In 2003, they released their first demo, Grátr. In summer 2004, Helrunar signed their first record deal with Prophecy Productions. Their debut album, Frostnacht, was released in December 2005. The band's second album, Baldr ok Ãss, followed in October 2007. In March 2008, guitarist Tim "Dionysos" Funke left the band, leading to a hiatus from live performances. Helrunar returned with new members in August 2009 and released their concept double album Sól in January 2011, which peaked at number 54 on the German charts. Their subsequent albums include Niederkunfft (February 2015) and Vanitas Vanitatvm (September 2018).
