Biography

Bathory was a Swedish extreme metal project formed in Vällingby, Stockholm on March 16, 1983 by Tomas Forsberg, known professionally as Quorthon. Initially a power trio, the group took its name from Erzsébet Báthory. The project's breakthrough came in 1984 with contributions of the songs "Sacrifice" (1984) and "The Return of the Darkness and Evil" (1984) to the compilation album Scandinavian Metal Attack (1984). The self-titled debut album Bathory (1984) followed later that year, starting a prolific discography that includes Under the Sign of the Black Mark (1987) and Blood Fire Death (1988). Bathory continued to release albums such as Hammerheart (1990) and Twilight of the Gods (1991), which saw a shift in musical style. The project is credited with pioneering black metal and Viking metal. The project ended upon the death of Forsberg from a heart attack on June 7, 2004.
