Mayhem was founded in Oslo in 1984. The Norwegian band plays black metal and is considered one of the formative formations of the early Norwegian extreme metal scene. The founding members are Ãystein Aarseth, born on March 22, 1968 in Oslo, Jørn Stubberud, born on September 8, 1968 in Oslo, and Kjetil Manheim. Mayhem began rehearsing and playing their first concerts in the underground in 1984. With its raw sound, radical aesthetics and uncompromising attitude, the group left its mark on Norwegian black metal in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1988, Per Yngve Ohlin, born on January 16, 1969 in Stockholm, joined the band as vocalist. His suicide on April 8, 1991 in KrÃ¥kstad marked a deep turning point. Ãystein Aarseth dies on August 10, 1993 in Oslo. Despite these events, Mayhem continued to work. The debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) is considered a key work of the genre. This was followed by Grand Declaration of War (2000), Chimera (2004) and Ordo ad Chao (2007), which reached number 12 in the Norwegian album charts. Esoteric Warfare (2014) and Daemon (2019) were released later. Another album follows in 2021 with Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando, which climbs to number 22 in the German charts. It took until February 2026 for another studio album to be released, Lithurgy of Death.
