Biography

Florist is an indie folk project formed in 2013 by songwriter Emily Sprague alongside Rick Spataro, Jonnie Baker, and Felix Walworth, emerging from a shared music scene in upstate New York. The group introduced their delicate, introspective sound with the EP We Have Been This Way Forever, followed by 6 days of songs in 2014, recorded shortly after Sprague suffered a serious bicycle accident. Their 2015 EP Holdly drew wider attention, landing them on Stereogum’s “50 Best New Bands” list and setting the stage for their 2016 debut album The Birds Outside Sang, which blended raw vulnerability with minimal folk arrangements. The track “Thank You” from that record gained unexpected recognition when Beyoncé sampled it in her 2019 concert film Homecoming. That same year, Sprague released Emily Alone, a stripped-down, deeply personal solo effort under the Florist name, which was named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork. The band returned as a full unit for their 2022 self-titled fourth album, earning widespread acclaim for its textured soundscapes and collaborative spirit. In 2025, Florist released their fifth full-length Jellywish via Double Double Whammy.
