Hussain Yoosuf, born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is a Canadian DJ and electronic music artist who performs under the stage name Spek. He began rapping at fourteen and joined the pioneering Canadian hipâhop collective Dream Warriors, contributing to their early releases in the midâ1990s. Spekâs breakthrough came with the 2001 EP Look Me Up and the single "I'm a Hippie", which established his presence on the Canadian charts. In 2001 he released the I'm A Hippie miniâalbum, followed by the 2002 fullâlength Don't Sweat The Small Stuff; the latter received critical attention from Loaded magazine and was noted for its blend of hipâhop and electronic elements. His 2002 single "Smell The Coffee" achieved commercial usage in advertising campaigns and television soundtracks, further expanding his audience. Spek collaborated with international artists such as Nitin Sawhney and toured with the UK jazzârap crew Us3, while also contributing to the soundtrack of the 2005 film Nefarious and its score. In 2016 he revisited his earlier material with the reissue I'm a Hippie. Throughout his career, Spek has maintained a focus on independent releases, with his work featured in contemporary media and live performances, including a soldâout appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019.
