Biography

Sylvester C. Henderson, known professionally as Duke Henderson, was an American blues shouter and jazz singer born on April 5, 1925, in Liberty, Missouri. He started his music career in the mid-1940s, debuting with Apollo Records in 1945. His initial releases did not achieve commercial success. In 1947, he recorded for Modern Records as the featured vocalist for the Al Wichard Sextette. Over the following years, he released material on various labels including Globe, Down Beat, Swing Time, Specialty, and Imperial. Henderson's 1953 release "Hey Mr. Kinsey" with Flair Records addressed contemporary social issues. Henderson later transitioned to a ministerial career, broadcasting as Brother Henderson on XERB in the late 1940s and on KPOP in the late 1950s, before serving as a preacher at Bethany Apostle Community Church. He died in Los Angeles in 1973. In 1994, Delmark Records issued the compilation album Get Your Kicks, which featured twenty tracks from Henderson's original Apollo recordings.
