Biography
Drowse is the musical project of American musician and producer Kyle Bates from Portland, Oregon. Bates began his music career by playing in local bands and recording music on his laptop. In 2013, he released his debut EP Songs to Sleep On through Television Records, marking the beginning of Drowse. The following year, he self-released Naive Sleep, a collection of recordings from 2011 and beyond. Bates' first full-length album, Soon Asleep, was released in 2015 via Apneic Void Sounds. In 2016, he contributed to Miserable's album Uncontrollable and released the EP Memory Bed. Drowse signed with The Flenser for his sophomore album Cold Air, released in 2018. This was followed by Light Mirror in 2019, which featured material recorded in Iceland. Subsequent releases include albums Second Self (2019) and Wane Into It (2022). In 2025, The Flenser released the collaborative LP Ash Souvenir with Black Metal duo Ragana.
