Xiu Xiu is an American experimental rock band formed in 2002 in San José, California, by songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer Jamie Stewart, the band's only permanent member since its inception. Over the years, Xiu Xiu has undergone numerous line-up changes. Notable members include Angela Seo (present since 2009), long-time collaborator turned core band member on keyboards, and drummer David Kendrick (formerly of Devo), present since 2022. The band is known for its avant-garde blend of experimental rock, indie rock, art pop, noise pop, electro and post-punk influences. The band's name is inspired by the Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Girl Sent to the Devil by Joan Chen (1998), which the leader cites as a major influence on their music. Xiu Xiu released their first two albums on the 5 Rue Christine label: Knife Play (2002) and A Promise (2003) were both well received by critics. Meanwhile, the Chapel of the Chimes EP (2002) and the Fag Patrol compilation followed in 2004, as did their third studio album, Fabulous Muscles. Xiu Xiu's music is characterized by its experimental approach, often blending unconventional instrumentation with intense, profound themes. Subsequent albums include La Forêt (2005) and The Air Force (2006). In 2008, the band released Women as Lovers on the Kill Rock Stars label, followed by Dear God, I Hate Myself (2010), which showcases the contribution of Angela Seo. After signing to Polyvinyl and Bella Union came Always (2012), Angel Guts: Red Classroom (2014) and Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks (2016), an album of covers of music composed by Angelo Badalementi for David Lynch's series. The band continued in its motley vein with the albums Forget (2017), Girl with Basket of Fruit (2019), Oh No (2021), Ignore Grief (2023), 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips (2024) and Xiu Mutha Fuckin' Xiu: Vol. 1 (2026), an album of covers featuring Talking Heads, Roy Orbison, Throbbing Gristle, Soft Ceill, Coil, Daniel Johnston, Robyn, GloRilla, The Runaways and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
