Biography

Hammock is an American ambient and post-rock duo formed in 2005 in Nashville, Tennessee, by Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson. Their music is characterized by ethereal textures, reverberating guitars and introspective soundscapes, often associated with a cinematic, contemplative atmosphere. On their debut album Kenotic (2005), they laid the foundations for a sonic universe blending ambient, shoegaze and post-rock. The following year, they released Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo (2006), which established their reputation on the independent scene. In 2010, Chasing After Shadows... Living with the Ghosts marks a more orchestral and emotional turn, followed by Departure Songs (2012), one of their most acclaimed records, exploring the theme of grief and transcendence through long, profound compositions. In 2013, Oblivion Hymns continues down this path, incorporating choirs and strings with new intensity. In 2016, Everything and Nothing combines their ambient style with more electronic and rhythmic elements. The duo continues to experiment with Universalis (2018) and Silencia (2019), two parts of an introspective trilogy followed by Elsewhere (2021). Back in 2023 with Love in the Void, Hammock collaborates with Yellowcard on A Hopeful Sign (2024), followed by From the Void (2024) and Nevertheless (2025).
