Biography

Dream pop / alternative rock band Cigarettes After Sex was formed in El Paso, Texas, in 2008, by singer Greg Gonzales, who was a university student at the time. The band’s original line-up included Randy Miller (bass), Jacob Tomsky (drums), and Philip Tubbs (keyboards / guitar). The band stood out with their androgynous tone, finely crafted melodies, and slow paced ethereal songs, blending elements of slowcore and dream pop. A first EP, titled I., was released in 2012, followed by a series of melancholic singles, including "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby," which appeared in the soundtracks of several TV series including The Handmaid's Tale. In 2017, the group released a self-titled debut album that found its main success in Europe (peaking at number 27 in the UK), featuring the standout track "Apocalypse." Evolving into a trio without Tubbs, Cigarettes After Sex released their second album, Cry, in 2019, which reached number 36 in the UK, with the track "Heavenly" reaching number 57 in France. In the following years, they released new standalone singles, including "You're All I Want" (2020), "Pistol" (2022), and "Bubblegum" (2023). In 2024, Cigarettes After Sex released the singles “Tejano Blue” and “Dark Vacay,” both of which were scheduled to be included on the band’s third album X’s.
