Biography
Donald MacPherson, born on September 5, 1922 in Glasgow, United Kingdom, was a Scottish bagpipe player. He began his musical journey at age five under the tutelage of his father Iain, an army piper during World War I. At 12, he joined the Boys' Brigade pipe band and entered his first solo competition at 15. MacPherson's competitive career took off in 1948 when he won the Gold Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering. He continued to accumulate numerous first places in various competitions. His notable album Highland Bagpipes was released in 1970. He retired from competitive playing at age 68 but continued to teach and adjudicate. MacPherson was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1986 for his services to piping and passed away on April 21, 2012.
