David Banks, born September 2, 1965 in Brooklyn, Newâ¯York, is an American DJ, producer and author known as DJ Disciple who began his career as a gospel DJ before transitioning to house and UK garage. Banksâ first professional mix appeared at Studioâ¯54, and his debut single "When the Music Stops" was released in 1993 on D:vision Records, gaining club traction in Italy. He followed with the "On the Dancefloor" single in 1994, which entered the UK singles chart at Number 67. Banks released fullâlength albums My True Colors (2000), featuring the track "It's Easy" that reached Number 96 on the UK Singles Chart. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s he collaborated with artists such as Dawn Tallman, Robbie Rivera, and Mary J.â¯Blige, and toured extensively in the United Kingdom, performing at venues including Ministry of Sound, Notting Hill Carnival, and the London club scene. In 2023, he coâauthored The Beat, the Scene, the Sound, a book detailing the evolution of house music in Newâ¯York City, published by Rowman & Littlefield. Banks has been recognized with a Grammy nomination for his single "Caught Up" and has received community awards for his activism and educational initiatives.
