Derek Boland, known as Derek B, was a British rapper and producer from London born in 1965. Boland began a career as a disc jockey at age 15 and worked for radio stations including Kiss FM and LWR before founding the station WBLS. The artist joined the label Music of Life and released the debut single âRock the Beatâ (1987) using the aliases DJ Derek B and MC EZQ. Recognition increased with the singles âGoodgrooveâ (1988) and âBad Young Brotherâ (1988), which both reached number 16 on the UK Singles Chart. Their discography includes the album Bullet from a Gun (1988), which reached number 11 in the United Kingdom, and the single âWe've Got the Juiceâ (1988), which reached number 56. Boland toured with artists including Run-DMC and Public Enemy and performed the song âFree Mandelaâ at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute (1988). The artist produced and remixed recordings for Eric B. & Rakim and Big Daddy Kane. Boland passed away in 2009.
