James Dent May Jr., born on May 6, 1985, in Jackson, Mississippi, known professionally as Dent May, is an American singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. He attended Jackson Prep, NYU Film School, and Ole Miss, where he studied English and Southern Studies and found inspiration in the music of Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood. Early in his career, he was a member of The Rockwells, a Mississippi power pop group. His discography includes the albums The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele (2009), Do Things (2012), Warm Blanket (2013), Across the Multiverse (2017), Late Checkout (2020), and What's for Breakfast? (2024). He also released the singles "Meet Me in the Garden" (2007), "That Feeling" (2010), "Fun" (2011), "Face Down in the Gutter of Your Love" (2016), "Why I Came to California" (2019), and "Crying Laughing" (2022). He co-founded Cats Purring, a self-described "North Mississippi Infotainment Cult" operating out of Oxford, Mississippi.
