Biography

American thrash metal band Dark Angel was formed in Downey, California in 1981 by founding guitarist Jim Durkin, drummer Gene Hoglan, bassist Mike Gonzalez and vocalist Don Doty. The group began with demos such as Gonna Burn (1983) and Demo II (1983), establishing a local underground presence before releasing their debut studio album We Have Arrived in March 1985. The album was followed by Darkness Descends (November 1986), which is regarded as an important release of the era, and Leave Scars (January 1989), the only Dark Angel record to enter the Billboard 200 at number 159. Subsequent albums Time Does Not Heal (February 1991) and Extinction Level Event (September 5 2025) continued the band’s progressive thrash approach. Dark Angel toured extensively with Slayer, Megadeth, and other prominent acts, and contributed a cover of "Creeping Death" to the 2004 Metallic Attack tribute. The group disbanded in 1992, reunited from 2002‑2005 and again in 2013, with lineup changes that left no original members after Jim Durkin’s death in March 2023. Gene Hoglan remains the sole original member, and the band released Extinction Level Event in 2025, marking its first studio album in over three decades.
