Biography
Whether charming rootsy traditionalists at the Grand Ole Opry or selling out arenas, wholesome songwriting duo Dan + Shay carved out a reputation for soaring country-pop hits. Dan Smyers grew up in Wexford, Pennsylvania, and studied finance at Carnegie Mellon University before following his musical ambitions to Nashville, while Shay Mooney grew up in Arkansas and had previously signed as a solo artist with T-Pain's Nappy Boy Entertainment label. The pair met at a party at Smyers' Nashville home in 2012 and quickly began writing together, reaching country radio in 2013 with their debut single "19 You + Me." Built around the polished, summery sound that helped them cross over into the pop mainstream, their debut album Where It All Began reached number 6 on the Billboard 200 in 2014. After touring with artists including Blake Shelton and Hunter Hayes, they scored further country hits with "Nothin' Like You" and "From the Ground Up," while second album Obsessed again reached the US top 10 in 2016. Support slots with Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker and their own headlining tours followed, along with their first CMT Music Award. Their self-titled third album arrived in 2018 and included "Tequila," "Speechless," and the Kelly Clarkson collaboration "Keeping Score." The duo subsequently teamed with Justin Bieber for "10,000 Hours," a number 4 pop hit that earned them the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, following earlier wins in the same category for "Tequila" and "Speechless." Their fourth album, Good Things, followed in 2021 and reached number 6 on the Billboard 200. After a lengthy tour left them considering whether to continue as a duo, Dan + Shay regrouped for 2023's Bigger Houses, preceded by "Save Me the Trouble," "Bigger Houses," and "Heartbreak on the Map." They supported the record with the Heartbreak on the Map Tour in 2024 and became the first coaching duo on NBC's The Voice, while also winning ACM Duo of the Year for a fourth time. Later that year, they released their first holiday collection, It's Officially Christmas: The Double Album, combining Christmas standards with original songs. In 2025, their version of Taylor Swift's "Back to December" reached the Top 5 of Billboard's Country Digital Song Sales chart, and they signed with The Core Entertainment for management. Dan + Shay returned to new original material in 2026 with "Say So," "Young," "Marry You Again," and "Her, The Kids, and Jesus," leading into the autobiographical album Young, released on August 21.
