Biography

Chris Brokaw is an American musician known for his work as both a guitarist and drummer, and as a member of the bands Codeine and Come. While studying at Oberlin College, he met Stephen Immerwahr, with whom he later formed Codeine. After graduating, Chris Brokaw played drums for several groups before joining Codeine, performing on their first two studio albums. In 1990, he returned to guitar and formed the band Come with Thalia Zedek. The band went on hiatus in 1998, later reuniting for live performances in 2008. Following his work with Come, Chris Brokaw pursued a solo career, beginning with releases such as Red Cities (2001), and composed and performed music for projects including I Was Born, But.... He also collaborated widely with other artists and formed the band Dirtmusic in 2007 with Chris Eckman and Hugo Race, releasing their self-titled debut album that year and later recording BKO (2010) in collaboration with the Tuareg group Tamikrest. Other notable solo releases include Incredible Love (2005), Gambler's Ecstasy (2012), The Hand That Wrote This Letter (2017), End of the Night (2019), Puritan (2021) and Ghost Ships (2025). In 2026, he collaborated with Tanya Donelly, of Throwing Muses and The Breeders fame, on The Undone Is Done Again.
