Biography

A well-known songwriter on the independent scene, notably through the groups Galaxie 500 and Luna, which he founded, or the duo Dean & Britta with Britta Phillips, Dean Wareham has also demonstrated his writing finesse as a solo artist. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, on August 1, 1963, he founded the Galaxie 500 trio in 1986 with Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang (future Damon & Naomi), for three cult albums: Today (1988), On Fire (1989) and This Is Our Music (1990). Immediately after the split, he brought together new partners to launch the band Luna, whose dream pop tinged with flashes of rock received the best of critical acclaim with each successive album (five in the 1990s and two in the 2000s, then one in 2017). After bassist Britta Phillips joined the band in 2000, he and her formed the duo Dean & Britta, whose career continued into the 2020s. Between these various activities, Dean Wareham recorded the albums Emancipated Hearts (2013), Dean Wareham (2014), Dean Wareham vs. Cheval Sombre (an exercise in dark country released in 2018), I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. (2021) and That's the Price of Loving Me (2025) on his own account.
