Biography

Thurston Joseph Moore was born on 25 July  1958 in Coral Gables, Florida, and grew up in Bethel, Connecticut, where he first heard "Louie Louie" at age five and bought his first electric guitar. After a brief stint at Western Connecticut State University, he moved to New York City in 1976, immersing himself in the post‑punk and no‑wave scenes and meeting future Sonic Youth bandmate Lee Ranaldo. Together they formed Sonic Youth in 1981, and the duo’s debut album Sonic Youth (1982) was released through Homestead and later SST, establishing a reputation for experimental tunings and avant‑rock sensibilities. Thurston Moore’s solo catalog followed, beginning with Psychic Hearts (1995) and including Trees Outside the Academy (2007), The Best Day (2014), and Flow Critical Lucidity (2024). He collaborated with Yoko Ono on Yokokimthurston (2012), performed with John Zorn on @ (2013), and contributed to the soundtrack of Backbeat (1994). In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked him 34th among the top guitarists, and he continues to release music through his Ecstatic Peace! label. In 2026, he collaborated with Stephen Michael Bonner aka Kramer on They Came Like Swallows: Seven Requiems for the Children of Gaza.
