Biography

William Rahr Callahan, known as Bill Callahan professionally and born 3 June 1966 in Silver Spring, Maryland, is an American singer‑songwriter and guitarist whose career began with lo‑fi cassette releases in the late 1980s. His breakthrough came in 1990 with the cassette Sewn to the Sky, leading to a contract with Drag City under the Smog moniker. Other releases under the Smog name include, Sewn to the Sky (1990), Forgotten Foundation (1992), and Julius Caesar (1993). Adopting his own name in 2007, Bill Callahan issued Woke on a Whaleheart (2007) and Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009). He followed with Apocalypse (2011), Dream River (2013), Have Fun with God (2014), Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (2019), Gold Record (2020), YTI⅃AƎЯ (2022), and My Days of 58 (2026). His work has earned critical acclaim and sustained influence within independent rock circles.
