Biography
Carl Joseph Stone, born February 10, 1953 in Los Angeles, is an American composer known for his work in live electronic music. He formed a jazz rock band with Z'EV and James Stewart from 1966 to 1969. After auditioning for Frank Zappa's Bizarre Records, Stone studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts under Morton Subotnick and James Tenney. Notable early works include "Dong Il Jang" (1982) and "Shibucho" (1984). In the 1980s, he began naming his works after favorite restaurants. In 1995, he released Kamiya Bar, a radio composition based on urban soundscape recordings from Tokyo. Notable albums include Woo Lae Oak (1983) and Exusiai (1999). Stone served as president of the American Music Center from 1992 to 1995 and received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award in 1999.
