Blackguard is a Canadian melodic death metal ensemble formed in 2001 in Montreal. Originally named Profugus Mortis, the group was established by Terry Deschenes and Justine Ethier. Paul Zinay joined as the vocalist in 2004. The ensemble released its debut studio recording, So It Begins, in 2007 through Prodisk. In 2008, the group signed with Nuclear Blast after receiving recognition in the label's MySpace Band Contest. The band released its eponymous major-label debut, Profugus Mortis, in 2009. The ensemble transitioned to Victory Records in 2010 and released the album Firefight in 2011. During its career, the group toured with artists including Lacuna Coil, Behemoth, and Voivod. Its discography also included the studio recording Storm, which appeared in 2020. Deschenes, Ethier, and Zinay remained the core members of the group.
