Pestilence, a Dutch death metal band, was formed in 1986 by Randy Meinhard, Patrick Mameli, and Marco Foddis. The group's initial lineup included Martin van Drunen on bass and vocals, who joined later that year. Pestilence released their first demo, Dysentery, in 1987, followed by The Penance later the same year, which secured them a record deal with Roadrunner Records. Their debut album, Malleus Maleficarum, was released in 1988 and showcased their thrash metal influences. The band's lineup changed frequently; Meinhard left after the debut album, and van Drunen departed following the release of Consuming Impulse in 1989. Mameli took over vocals for Testimony of the Ancients, released in 1991, which featured a more progressive sound with keyboard elements. The band's final studio album before disbanding was Spheres, released in 1993. Pestilence's reunion was announced in 2008 and later released several albums, including Resurrection Macabre (2009) and Obsideo (2013).
