Michael Addison Stewart, known professionally as Backwards Sam Firk, was born on September 18, 1943, in Asheville, North Carolina. He began his career as a country blues singer and fingerstyle guitarist, making his first recordings for Joe Bussard's Fonotone Records in the early 1960s. Stewart's debut solo album, The True Blues and Gospel, was released by Adelphi Records in 1968. He collaborated with John Fahey as part of the Mississippi Swampers and worked extensively with older blues artists such as Richard "Hacksaw" Harney and Big Joe Williams. Firk also backed Yank Rachell on a session for Blue Goose Records and recorded Henry T. Music Man (1973) with Henry Townsend. By the mid-1970s, he transitioned to dealing in rare blues records, amassing one of the most significant collections of vintage recordings. Firk died on October 11, 2007, at the age of 64.
