Biography

Apparat Organ Quartet was founded in 1999 in Reykjavík, Iceland. The band originally included Hörður Bragason, Músikvatur, Úlfur Eldjárn, and Jóhann Jóhannsson. They were soon joined by drummer Þorvaldur Gröndal, who was replaced in 2001 by Arnar Geir Ómarsson. The band's debut album, Apparat Organ Quartet, was released in 2002 on Thule Records and re-released in a remastered version in 2005 by 12 Tónar. Their second album, Pólýfónía, followed in December 2010 on 12 Tónar and was later released in Scandinavia by Crunchy Frog Records in 2011. The band's sound evolved from atmospheric post-rock to a more robust, riff-driven style incorporating electronic elements and hard rock beats. Jóhann Jóhannsson left the band in 2012 due to his solo projects and passed away in February 2018. Apparat Organ Quartet was featured in Ari Alexander Ergis Magnússon's 2005 documentary Screaming Masterpiece.
