Biography

An all-female vocal trio, Annie and the Caldwells are an offshoot of Pops Staples' Staple Singers. Annie Caldwell was eleven years old when she joined the Chicago group through her husband, guitarist and co-founder Willie Joe Caldwell. Managing a clothing store in West Point, she rubbed shoulders with the Church of God in Christ community of artists and formed the group Annie and the Caldwells with her daughters Deborah and Anjessica, her goddaughter Toni Rivers and her two sons, the elder Willie Caldwell Jr. on bass and the younger Abel Aquirius on drums. The band recorded the albums Answer Me (2013) and We Made It (2018) for Ecko Records, before being rediscovered by David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, which released the single "Wrong" and the EP Can't Lose My (Soul) in 2025.
