Anita Dobson, born Anita May on April 29, 1949, in Stepney, London, is a British actress and singer. She trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art before embarking on her career. Her breakthrough as a singer came with "Anyone Can Fall In Love", released in August 1986, which reached Number 4 in the UK singles chart. The song was based on the theme music of EastEnders, the BBC soap opera where Dobson played landlady Angie Watts from 1985 to 1988. Her other notable singles include "On My Own" (1986), "I Dream Of Christmas" (1987), and "In One Of My Weaker Moments" (1988). Dobson's musical career also includes the album Talking Of Love released in 1988. She has appeared in several television series, including guest roles in Red Dwarf, Rab C. Nesbitt, and The Bill. Her film appearances include Darkness Falls (1999) and London Road (2015). In 2003, she was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Actress for her role in the National Theatre production of Frozen. She has also starred in the West End as Mama Morton in the musical Chicago (2003), Gertrude in Hamlet (2005).
