Biography
An Chi-hwan is a South Korean singer-songwriter and record producer known for his contributions to folk, pop, rock, and ballad music. Born on November 16, 1965, in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, he studied social work at Yonsei University, where he joined the schoolâs central band Ullimtu in 1984 and later the band Dawn in 1986. In 1988, An became a member of the activist folk group Nochatsa (Song Finders), contributing to their second album Song Finders 2 (1989) with the songs "At The Vast Field (ê´ì¼ìì)" and "Dried Leaves Revive (ë§ë¥¸ì ë¤ì ì´ìë)" before departing. He debuted as a solo artist in 1990 but faced early struggles with his label. His breakthrough came with Confession (1993) and An Chi-hwan 1+2 (1994). Anâs music is known for its socially conscious themes, touching on history, democracy, and personal struggles. In 2014, he was diagnosed with rectal cancer, inspiring the reflective album 50 (2015). His most recent album, 53 (2018), continues his legacy of heartfelt storytelling.
