Biography

Act, a short-lived synth-pop group from the United Kingdom, was formed in 1989 and comprised Scottish musician Thomas Leer and German vocalist Claudia Brücken. The band signed to ZTT Records and released their debut single "Snobbery and Decay" in 1987, which peaked at number 60 on the UK Singles Chart and number 38 in Italy. Their music blended synthpop and disco with influences from psychedelic rock and musical theatre, often exploring themes of debauchery and moral bankruptcy. Act's debut album Laughter, Tears & Rage was released in January 1988 and later reissued in 2004 as a CD and a 3CD box set. The band also released the single "Absolutely Immune" in 1987 and "I Can't Escape from You" in 1988, although their planned single "Chance" was withdrawn due to copyright issues surrounding an ABBA sample. Act disbanded shortly after the release of Laughter, Tears & Rage. In 2015, a retrospective album titled Love & Hate: A Compact Introduction was released, compiling 30 tracks from their discography.
