Biography

William Holly Johnson was born in Liverpool on February 9, 1960. After playing bass with the legendary band Big in Japan from 1977 to 1979, he became leader of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood phenomenon in 1980, under the guidance of producer Trevor Horn. When the group split up in 1987, he went platinum with his album Blast (1989). Starting out in synthpop, Holly Johnson gradually turned to house and dance, as his popularity waned and the discovery of his HIV-positive status forced him to take a break in 1991. He only came back for Soulstream in 1999, and had to wait until Europa in 2014 for a return to success in the UK.
