Biography

British author, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, William Nelson aka Bill Nelson was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, on December 18, 1948. A prolific musician renowned for his creative guitar playing, he founded the art-rock band Be-Bop Deluxe in the 1970s, before embarking on a solo career marked by sound experimentation, ambient, electronic music and visual art. He founded Be-Bop Deluxe in 1972, a band that blended glam rock, art rock and progressive influences. After a blues-rock-oriented debut album, Axe Victim (1974), the band quickly refined its style with Futurama (1975), produced by Roy Thomas Baker. Critical and commercial success continued with Sunburst Finish (1976), featuring the iconic single "Ships in the Night". The albums Modern Music (1976) and Drastic Plastic (1978) continued the evolution towards more experimental music, flirting with proto-new wave and electronic music. After the dissolution of Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978, Nelson created the Red Noise project and released Sound-on-Sound (1979), an abrasive and innovative album considered a precursor of new wave and synthpunk. He then embarked on an extremely prolific solo career, exploring a multitude of styles ranging from ambient to experimental instrumental music and sophisticated pop. His solo work began in earnest with the well-received Quit Dreaming and Get on the Beam (1981), followed by The Love That Whirls (1982). Over the decades, Nelson became a cult figure, releasing a steady stream of records, often self-produced via his own Cocteau Records label, then via Sonoluxe. A visual artist in his own right, Bill Nelson often accompanies his records with collages, photographs and diaries. His DIY approach and creative freedom have kept him away from commercial circuits, but earned him the admiration of a loyal fan and musician base, as well as a lasting influence on independent electronic music and ambient production. He explores electronic textures, processed guitar, cinematic soundscapes and meditative loops. Notable albums include Chance Encounters in the Garden of Lights (1987), Simplex (1990), Practically Wired... Or How I Became Guitarboy (1995), Plaything (2001), Joy Through Amplification (2010) and Drive This Comet Across the Sky (2022).
