Biography

Wolfgang SchlÃ¼ter, born on November 12, 1933 in Berlin, Germany, was a percussionist and vibraphonist. He studied timpani and percussion at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1949 to 1954, but switched to mallet instruments due to a knee injury. SchlÃ¼ter's breakthrough came when he joined Michael Naura's quintet in 1956. He later became a member of the NDR Bigband in 1965 and collaborated with notable figures such as Kurt Edelhagen, Erwin Lehn, Werner MÃ¼ller, Paul Kuhn, Peter Herbolzheimer, and Volker Kriegel. SchlÃ¼ter also played on studio recordings for the James Last Band. His albums include Kein Apolloprogramm FÃ¼r Lyrik (1976), Country Children (1980), and Dualism (1982). He received several awards, including the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize in 2001 and the 2017 Hamburg Jazz Prize. SchlÃ¼ter passed away on November 12, 2018.
