Biography

Heather Bishop (born April 25, 1949) was a Canadian folk and children’s singer-songwriter and social activist from Regina, Saskatchewan. Bishop studied piano and guitar before earning a degree from the University of Regina in 1969. She performed with the all-women ensemble Walpurgis Night in the early 1970s and began her solo career in 1976, the same year she founded Mother of Pearl Records. Bishop emerged as a leading figure in feminist and children’s music during the 1980s. She released the children’s album Belly Button: A Collection of Songs for Children in 1982. Her discography included fifteen albums, such as A Taste of the Blues (1987) and Chickee's on the Run (1997), both of which received Juno Award nominations. She also recorded A Tribute to Peggy Lee (2004). Bishop received the Order of Manitoba (2001) and the Order of Canada (2005).
