Biography

Wild Romance is an iconic Dutch band that accompanied singer, painter and iconic Dutch rock figure Herman Brood. Formed in Groningen in 1976, the band became Brood's essential musical support, fusing rock 'n' roll, pub rock, blues and new wave with raw energy and a provocative aesthetic. It was with the album Shpritsz (1978), buoyed by the international hit "Saturday Night", that Wild Romance and Brood achieved major recognition, making him a cult figure in the Netherlands and his backing band as explosive as they were upright. The classic line-up includes guitarist Dany Lademacher, bassist Freddie Cavalli and drummer Cees "Ani" Meerman, among others. Meerman, who helped forge the band's intense, abrasive sound. Their next album, Cha Cha (1978), confirmed their success and was accompanied by a film of the same name, in which Brood played himself. In the 1980s, despite a few attempts to break into the U.S. and albums such as Go Nutz (1979), Frisz & Sympatisz (1982) and The Brood, the band's momentum was held back by Brood's excesses and internal tensions. After several changes of musicians and periods of inactivity, Wild Romance remains intimately linked to the image and fate of Brood, who took his own life on July 11, 2001. Although the band has survived in various forms, it remains inseparable from the chaotic, charismatic and visceral aura of Herman Brood, the ultimate figure of Dutch rock'n'roll. In 2018, the musicians reunited to record the album No Time. One of the band's mainstays from 1977 to 1980, then from 1986 to 1990, Dany Lademacher died on July 3, 2025 at the age of 75.
