Biography
The Motors are best known for their 1978 hit "Airport". Formed in London in 1977, the band consists of former Ducks Deluxe members Nick Garvey (guitar, bass, vocals) and Andy McMaster (keyboards, vocals), plus Bram Tchaikovsky (guitar) and Ricky Slaughter (Richard Wernham, drums). Noticed at the Marque Club and during a session for John Peel on Radio 1, the band signed with Virgin and recorded a debut album at the crossroads of pub rock and power pop, entitled 1 (1977), including "Dancing the Night Away " (charted at no. 42). The album's initial success turned into a popular success with the pub rock/new wave track "Airport", released on May 19, 1978 and charting throughout Europe (#4 in the UK). It boosted sales of the album Approved by the Motors (no. 60) and the following single "Forget About You" (no. 13). The departure of Tchaikovsky and Wernham after a concert at the Reading Festival, which proved to be the band's last, gave way to another line-up with Martin Ace and Terry Williams for the 3rd album Tennement Steps (1980) and its lead single "Love and Loneliness " (no. 58). The end of the band was announced at the same time, and they never reformed.
