Biography

Whang Bo-ryung, born February 26, 1970, in Seoul, South Korea, is a South Korean-American singer, songwriter, and visual artist. She is best known as the founder and lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Smacksoft. After moving to the U.S. at fifteen, Whang developed a passion for music and art. While attending New York’s Pratt Institute, she started performing with the duo Sun & Fish. Her journey as a solo artist began in South Korea in the late 1990s, where her unique blend of punk, avant-garde, and alternative rock garnered attention. She released her debut album Cat With Three Ears in 1998, followed by The Sun Sign in 2001, which included her recently formed band Smacksoft. Whang took a hiatus to complete her B.F.A. in sculpture at Pratt, graduating in 2007. Returning to Seoul, she relaunched Smacksoft and released the EP Smacksoft 2.5 in 2009. The band received nominations for Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards in 2010 and 2013. In 2014, Whang released her third solo album, As If Nothing Ever Happened. Beyond music, she is a painter and performance artist, frequently integrating her visual art with her musical performances.
