Biography

Smacksoft, formed in 2000 by lead singer-songwriter Whang Bo-ryung, is a prominent South Korean post-punk and experimental rock band known for its unique sound and contributions to the indie music scene, particularly in Hongdae, Seoul. Whang, a respected figure in the local rock community, returned to Korea after studying in the U.S. and began performing before forming the band to support her album Sun Sign (2001). After an early tour in 2002, the band took a hiatus as Whang focused on her education and travels. Reuniting in 2008, Smacksoft released the EP SmackSoft 2.5 and gained critical acclaim with their albums Shines in the Dark (2009) and Follow Your Heart (2012), both nominated for Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards. Their style blends post-punk with elements of rock and electronica, influenced by artists like Brian Eno and Sonic Youth. The band has performed internationally, including at SXSW, and their sixth album, Urbane Sanity, was released in 2016. The current regular members are Whang Bo-ryung(vocal), Yang Seung-hyun(guitar), DeAnthony Nelson Jr.(drums), and Shin Jiyong(bass).
